Verdanian Wetland Preserve
The Verdanian Wetland Preserve is the cultural and ecological heartland of the Drowned Kingdoms lizardfolk descendants on Verdania. Established approximately 4,500 years ago when the first Drowned Kingdoms refugees were settled in Verdania's tropical wetland regions, the Preserve has grown into one of the most successful ecosystem reconstruction projects in Trisuran history.
Origin
When the Sphere of the Drowned Kingdoms collapsed (CSR-012 in the Sphere Collapse Registry), approximately 1.5 million survivors were evacuated — disproportionately drawn from the keeper-lineages, the lizardfolk clans responsible for maintaining the ecological balance of their waterlogged homeworld. They arrived in Trisurus carrying not just themselves but an entire ecological tradition: the knowledge of how to cultivate, maintain, and balance a wetland ecosystem that had evolved over millions of years in a world that no longer existed.
Settled in Verdania's closest analog to their home environment, the keeper-lineages immediately began reconstruction. Not of their civilization, but of their ecosystem. Using genetic samples preserved during evacuation and techniques passed down through generations of ecological stewardship, they rebuilt a functional wetland biome from the fragments of a dead world.
The Preserve Today
The Preserve spans thousands of square kilometers of Verdania's tropical belt — a managed wilderness of mangrove forests, reed marshes, flooded plains, and interconnected waterways. It is simultaneously a living memorial to the Drowned Kingdoms, a functional ecosystem supporting hundreds of transplanted species, and a research site where Trisuran ecologists study cross-sphere biological integration.
The keeper-lineages manage the Preserve with the same meticulous care their ancestors applied to the original ecosystem. Every species interaction is monitored. Invasive organisms from Verdania's native biome are controlled at the boundaries. Water chemistry, nutrient cycles, and population dynamics are maintained through a combination of traditional ecological knowledge and modern Trisuran monitoring technology.
Significance
The Preserve represents the proof that biological preservation works — that an ecosystem destroyed by sphere collapse can be rebuilt, however imperfectly, from the fragments that survive. It is the model that the Gene Archives and the Consortium's ecological preservation programs aspire to replicate for every collapsed sphere.
The Drowned Kingdoms lizardfolk maintain a distinct identity as keeper-lineages with an unbroken chain of ecological responsibility stretching back to their origin sphere. This heritage carries considerable cultural weight and, increasingly, political influence in Verdanian environmental policy. The keeper-lineages do not merely live in the Preserve — they are its custodians, and they take that obligation with a seriousness that four and a half millennia have not diminished.
